How to Paint Plastic Cabinets

January 5, 2023

Plastic cabinets can be a great addition to your kitchen. Not only do they come in a variety of colors and finishes, they are durable and lightweight. They are also available in a number of different sizes. So whether you are storing items in a garage, a patio, or even a basement, you can find the right plastic cabinet for the job.

If you're remodeling your kitchen or bathroom, you may consider a thermofoil cabinet. These cabinets are made of a thin layer of vinyl, or thermofoil. The material has a non-porous surface and is easy to wipe clean. This makes them a popular choice for bathrooms and other rooms where there is high traffic. However, you should be aware that they may chip and peel over time.

To get the most out of your thermofoil cabinets, follow a few simple steps. First, make sure the cabinet is in good shape. You can do some DIY work to fix small cracks or scratches, but larger areas should be fixed by a professional.

Once you have determined if your plastic cabinet needs repair, you can begin by cleaning the surfaces with a soft cloth and dish detergent. Be careful to remove any leftover paint or other contaminants. Sanding the surfaces will help smooth the transition between the bare wood and the plastic coating.

Next, use a paintbrush to apply a good primer. An oil-based primer is the safest option. It should be applied with long, even strokes. Allow it to dry for about a day before painting.

Depending on your original colour, a second coat of paint may be required. After the paint dries, you can scuff-sand the finished surface with fine sandpaper. A scuff-sanding finish will add texture to the surface.

You'll probably need to repeat this process for the second and third coats, as well. Before you begin, take some pictures of your cabinet. As you paint, you'll want to be able to see the different areas that need more coverage.

Alternatively, you can choose to have a professional reface your plastic cabinets. The cost of doing this will vary, but will typically range between $1,000 and $1,500. But, if you're willing to invest, you'll have a beautiful new kitchen that will last you for years to come.

Another way to increase the life of your plastic cabinets is to apply a thin layer of plastic filler to the cracked or damaged areas. You'll need a thin plastic stick to help you create a filler. Press the filler into the cracks and then clean with a damp cloth. Remove the filler when it's dry.

Finally, you'll want to apply a new coat of paint to the entire surface. Depending on the size of your cabinet, you may need two or more topcoats to fully protect your new paint. In addition, you should be sure to leave at least a half hour between coats.

Using plastic cabinets in your kitchen can be a great way to organize your items. Not only are they affordable, but they're lightweight and easy to move.
