Tempe Transportation Center

[last_updated_date]

Introduction

Tempe Transportation Center is a multi-modal transit hub located in downtown Tempe, Arizona. It serves as a hub for Valley Metro regional and express buses, Valley Metro Light Rail, and Amtrak train services. The transportation center is a popular transportation hub for commuters and visitors alike.

History

The Tempe Transportation Center was completed in 2008, with a budget of $33 million. The design was done by RNL Design and built by Sundt Construction. With the transportation center's design, Tempe wanted to create a mix of public art, sustainability, and safety. The two-story building features a unique design, with a roof that appears to float above the building.

Design

The designers focused on creating an iconic structure that would serve as a gateway to downtown Tempe. The building's design features a unique metal roof that slopes upward, with six stylized fins. The fins are made of perforated stainless steel, which allows natural daylight to filter into the building. The transportation center also features a floor-to-ceiling glass rotunda, providing a bright and open atmosphere for passengers.

The Tempe Transportation center is also a model for sustainable design. It features a green roof that reduces stormwater runoff, decreases building energy costs, and improves air quality. A large photovoltaic array provides up to 25% of the building's energy requirements. The building's design incorporates a variety of materials and textures to provide visual interest and to complement the surrounding urban environment.

Services

The Tempe Transportation Center offers multiple transit options for passengers. Valley Metro Light Rail is accessible from the second level of the building, providing access to the cities of Phoenix, Mesa, and Tempe. The transportation center also serves as a hub for several Valley Metro express and regional bus routes, and Amtrak train services.

For those who prefer cycling, the center provides bike racks and lockers, which are located outside the building. Bicycle commuters can also take advantage of showers and changing rooms located on the second level.

In addition to transportation services, the Tempe Transportation Center is equipped with customer service staff, waiting areas, and restrooms. Food and drink vending machines are also available on the first level.

Location

The Tempe Transportation Center is located in the heart of downtown Tempe, at 200 East Fifth Street. The building is easily accessible from Arizona State University and nearby businesses. There is also ample parking located nearby.

The transportation center is located near many of Tempe's best attractions, including Tempe Beach Park, the Tempe Center for the Arts, and the Mill Avenue Arts District. Visitors can take advantage of the transportation center's close proximity to these sites as well as to the city's many shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Conclusion

The Tempe Transportation Center is a hub for multiple transit options, designed with sustainability and safety in mind. With its unique floating roof, green roof, and photovoltaic array, the center is a true model for sustainable design. Its convenient location in downtown Tempe makes it an ideal transportation option for commuters and visitors alike.
