Learn the Scales and Fingerings for E Flat, Two Flat, and Three Flat

Two and three-flat apartment buildings have long been an integral part of Chicago's housing history, offering immigrants their first step to living the American dream while remaining affordable options.

Now, a Chicago company hopes modular homes could help address its affordable housing crisis. These houses can be constructed quickly on assembly lines before being transported directly to vacant lots for placement.

Key of E-flat

E flat is an attractive key with an inviting sound. Like other flat keys, E flat may feel different than white key chords at first, but with practice it will soon feel natural! In this post we will look at scale, chords and fingerings specific to E flat so that you have a solid understanding of this key.

Beethoven composed both the Emperor piano concerto and Eroica symphony in E-flat; more recently, Adele wrote Rolling in the Deep using this key, making this an excellent one to master!

Major Triad

Triads are chords composed of three notes. Triads may be major, minor, diminished or augmented; their qualities being determined by the interval between its root note and third note as well as between third note and fifth note.

Knowing these shapes can be invaluable for learning chord quality by ear. Furthermore, their mobility up and down the fretboard enables you to create various types of chords by simply moving one or two frets of their shape up or down the fretboard - this feature is especially handy when playing with other musicians as it creates more space sonic-wise; playing a full five-note chord may overwhelm listeners or other musicians while using simple major triads can make music sound more open and spacious.

Minor Triad

Once you've mastered major triad shapes and chords, it's time to expand your repertoire with minor triads - they offer just as many uses, while being slightly more challenging!

At first, switch out the major 3rd for a minor 3rd - everything else stays the same so it remains an essentially the same chord!

Triads may be major, minor, diminished or augmented depending on their chord's root and relationship to the major scale. Their qualities are determined by the quality of intervals between their root and third or fourth points and fifth point or between third point and fifth point respectively.

To assess a triad's quality, sketch the chord's root on a staff and add any accidentals from its key signature. Next, draw notes a third and fifth above its roots (i.e. draw a snowperson).

Major Scale

The major scale is an essential element of Western music. It forms chords, triads, arpeggios and much more, making learning it vital to interpreting songs or pieces of music that you hear as well as improvising freely and successfully.

The starting note of any major scale is known as its keynote or tonic; for instance, in C's key, middle C is this tonic note and all subsequent steps and half steps revolve around it.

All major scales contain seven notes. From this basis, any given major scale can produce seven unique modes, with Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian Aeolian and Locrian being some of the more commonly encountered ones. Each mode uses the same seven notes but starts on a different note within that scale.

Minor Scale

Minor scales form an essential foundation of music, providing chords and melodies with an important source of melody and chord progressions. There are two forms of minor scale: natural minor and harmonic minor. Harmonic minor is similar to natural minor but its seventh scale degree rises by one semitone when ascending or descending.

This alteration makes chord progressions simpler to work with and creates an interesting sound, while providing opportunities for you to improvise melodies that don't come as naturally with natural minor scale melodies.

This scale can often be heard in jazz music, from Franz Liszt to Katy Perry or Joe Satriani utilizing it. It works particularly well when employed within an i-iv-v-i progression and provides an ideal means for creating minor tonality.
