Living rooms with shedding pets need a brush system that can handle hair without constant cutting. Bedrooms often need quieter scheduled runs, while mudrooms and entryways need stronger pickup for grit that can scratch sealed wood if it is dragged around.
If your home has both hardwood and rugs, do not buy only for maximum suction. Navigation, wheel cleanliness, roller access, and obstacle handling are just as important. A robot that reliably finishes the room every day is usually more useful than a more powerful model that gets stuck, leaves clumps near thresholds, or requires too much babysitting. Treat app features as a bonus after the basics are covered: floor safety, pet-hair handling, maintenance access, and repeatable cleaning paths.
Ownership Costs To Check
The purchase price is only one part of the decision. Filters, side brushes, roller assemblies, mop pads, and self-emptying bags can change the long-term cost. If you have multiple pets, assume those parts will wear faster than the default replacement schedule suggests. Check whether parts are easy to find and whether the model uses common accessories or a narrow set of proprietary replacements.
Also consider the cost of your time. A cheaper robot that needs frequent untangling or manual bin emptying may be fine for a small apartment, but it can become annoying in a larger home with pets. A self-emptying dock costs more upfront, yet it can be worth it if the robot runs daily and keeps floors presentable between deeper cleanings.
