In addition, smart devices increase home value and resale potential by delivering a branded experience for the occupants, says Stephen Embry, a partner at Frost Brown Todd in Lexington, Ky., who recently discussed these issues with NAHB's Construction Liability, Risk Management and Building Materials Committee at the 2017 Mid-Year Meeting.

For builders and integrators, the challenge is to offer smart technologies that meet customer preferences while also helping them achieve their project budget. That requires a system that integrates all essential smart home controls.

ACEEE estimates that if all 50 states had mandatory EERS, electricity sales would be 20% lower and natural gas savings would be 13% higher by 2030.

By implementing energy-efficient technologies, industries can cut their operating costs while still maintaining a competitive edge in the global marketplace.

Among the most promising trends is a new standard called Matter that is designed to make all connected home devices work together, allowing them to communicate with each other and with the user via a single app. However, it will take time for Matter to gain widespread adoption.

But with the right approach, smart home devices will be able to deliver an experience that homeowners love and builders can be proud of. Builders, integrators and contractors will need to prioritize providing a unified network of smart home devices rather than a loosely coupled collection of disparate technology platforms, apps and interfaces that homeowners often find confusing and hard to control.
