Under the skilled guidance of jockey D. Wayne Lukas, Seize the Grey maintained a strong lead throughout the race. Despite a fierce challenge from Mystik Dan towards the end, Seize the Grey held firm to win the Preakness Stakes. This marked another milestone for Lukas, who at 88 years old, became the oldest trainer to win a Triple Crown race, adding his seventh Preakness Stakes and 15th Triple Crown win to his illustrious career.
The 2024 Preakness Stakes was especially notable for being run on a muddy track, a condition not seen in 85 years. The 100th running of the Black-Eyed Susan Day was another highlight, part of a 14-race program featuring six stakes with a combined purse of $1 million. The event set a record total handle of $28.4 million, indicating its popularity. This historic day served as a lead-up to the 149th Preakness Stakes, reinforcing its significance in the racing calendar.
In the lead-up to the race, the post positions and odds were set, with Mystik Dan being the new favorite at 5/2 odds after Muth's scratch due to a fever. Other top contenders included Imagination at 6-1, Catching Freedom at 7/2, and Tuscan Gold at 9/2. This year also introduced a brand new hospitality offering located at the finish line, a private luxury suite along the turf rail next to Turfside Terrace. The Finish Line Suites provided a customizable and exclusive experience, complete with gourmet food, personalized bar service, and prime views of the finish line. Accommodating up to 24 guests, the suite included numerous amenities such as preferred parking, flat screen TVs, executive restrooms, and access to betting options.
