Movies About Architects

January 4, 2023

If you're interested in movies that revolve around architecture, you'll want to check out a few of the most popular films. While it's true that architects are often presented as stereotypical starving artists in the media, the reality is that they're often more than just that. In fact, they have a deep passion for design and art and are constantly thinking of ways to make their designs more functional and interesting. Whether it's building a house or designing a skyscraper, filmmakers are always looking to put a spin on the architectural profession.

One of the most iconic portrayals of the architect in a film is the character in The Fountainhead. This black-and-white drama film was adapted from Ayn Rand's novel of the same name. It tells the story of an architect whose father dies and he must take over his father's legacy. His son also faces the challenge of making sense of his father's works and his own.

There are other movies that have had an impact on the way we see architects. These include Blade Runner, High-Rise and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Each of these movies offers a different take on the architectural genre, but all have some overlapping characteristics.

Blade Runner is a dystopian futuristic movie that depicts an alternative future of Los Angeles. Its images of a futuristic city of the future are inspiring and complex. However, its depiction of an architect isn't all that impressive.

On the other hand, High-Rise explores a modern day high-rise building in an entirely different way. Instead of using a futuristic setting, this movie uses a real-world setting of a high-rise building that has been fragmented into hundreds of different buildings. By illustrating this, it's easy to see how an architect's designs can influence human behavior.

In contrast, Colombus is a fictional drama that explores love, sacrifice and betrayal. It also demonstrates the power of a modernist architectural design. Designed by famous architect Louis Kahn, the movie follows the life of the architect's son, who is attempting to understand his father's work.

Another great example is the film Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan. It features a sequence of dream-like scenes in a futuristic city that will inspire all architects. Designed in various layers of a multi-level building, the sequence shows the potential for limitless space and intricate design.

Playtime is a 1967 comedy film that is also full of the architectural awsers. Set in a futuristic city, it features a variety of sites and buildings that are both architecturally relevant and fun.

Despite the numerous architectural films, there's one that stands out from the rest: Stranger Things. This Netflix show is a unique environment that could be anywhere in the world. With absurd machines, bizarre characters and unique situations, this show is perfect for anyone who loves technology.

Even if you don't particularly like architects, you should at least give this movie a chance. Although it might not be a perfect reflection of their career, it's a worthwhile exercise for anyone who's ever thought about a career in architecture.
