Can Chickens Fly?

Omlet receives many inquiries on whether chickens can fly. While it's a reasonable question, the short answer is no: A healthy hen may flap her wings and jump a few metres, but cannot outfly a predator with wings such as a fox or falcon. Young chickens may still be capable of flying as adults but will quickly outgrow that desire and instinct; most breeds of adult chickens still possess enough speed that running faster is often preferred over flapping wings.

Can chickens climb?

When chickens sense danger from predators in the distance, they tend to flee into tree branches where they'll be safe from larger animals that might seek them out as dinner. But this strategy won't last if one is following close behind; trying to fly away only leads to disaster if your prey flies back out before your attempt at flight has taken hold - they will probably end up landing back on the ground and being killed immediately!

Birds generate lift (the upward force of air moving over their wings) by flexing their legs and flapping their wings, which should ideally cover at least 0.6 ounces per square inch of body weight for take off and flight. Domestic chicken breeds such as Silkies usually have too high of wing loadings to allow them to fly optimally.

There are breeds of chicken that can fly - such as Sumatras, Old English Game, Hamburgs and Araucanas; as well as bantam breeds Fayoumi Jaerhon Lakenvelder. But many other breeds either don't fly at all or only barely. Orpingtons and Plymouth Rocks can't fly at all due to being too heavy, while Malay and Silkies don't possess enough feather structure to provide sufficient lift.

Reason #1 that chickens cannot fly: domestication
